WordPress website design: what you actually get

The short version first, then the detail.

WordPress website design is the planning, design and build of a business website on self-hosted WordPress, the open-source platform behind a large share of the web. You get a site you own, can extend without limits and can optimise fully for search.

Our builds use a lightweight theme and a short list of well-maintained plugins rather than a heavy page builder stacked with add-ons. Pages are mapped to real searches before design starts, so each service and location has one clear page instead of several weak ones competing. That planning is the same groundwork our SEO team relies on later, and it is why WordPress suits firms that intend to grow through content.

Is WordPress the right choice for your business?

An honest answer, including when we would point you elsewhere.

WordPress earns its place when a business needs pages and features that hosted builders handle awkwardly: dozens of service and area pages, a knowledge base, member areas, booking rules or links into accounting and CRM software. It also gives the deepest control over technical search settings.

  • You plan to publish guides, case notes or news regularly
  • You offer several services across several towns
  • You need custom forms, calculators or integrations
  • You want to own every file and choose your own host
  • Search is, or will be, your main source of enquiries

It is the wrong fit if you want to change layouts yourself every week with no learning curve. In that case a Wix website or Squarespace is usually kinder, and if you mainly sell products, compare Shopify first.

Why so many WordPress sites disappoint

WordPress itself is rarely the problem. How it was built usually is.

What we usually inheritHow we build it instead
A page builder plus forty plugins, so every page loads slowly

A lean theme, native blocks and a plugin list we can justify line by line.

Premium themes downloaded from unofficial sites, carrying hidden malware

Licensed or custom themes only, installed from trusted sources.

Hosting, domain and admin accounts registered in your business name from day one.

Nobody updated anything after launch, so the site was hacked a year later

A written update routine, or Website Care if you would rather we handled it.

Blog posts and service pages target the same search and cancel each other out

A page plan where every page has one job, checked before content is written.

WooCommerce, bookings and integrations

Where WordPress pulls ahead of hosted builders.

WooCommerce turns a WordPress site into a shop without moving platform, which suits businesses selling alongside services, trade customers with their own price lists, or products with unusual options. For a pure online store with high order volumes we will often recommend Shopify instead, and say so in the audit.

We also connect booking tools, quote calculators, Xero, HubSpot and mailing platforms. Anything that needs bespoke code, such as client portals or complex pricing logic, moves to custom development so it is scoped and tested properly rather than bolted on with another plugin.

  • WooCommerce shops with stock, delivery zones and VAT set up
  • Appointment booking with reminders
  • Quote and finance calculators
  • Xero, HubSpot and Mailchimp connections
  • Members-only pages and downloads

How a WordPress project runs

Most sites launch in three to six weeks. The full sequence is on how it works.

  1. Week 0Audit and plan

We review your current site or market and agree the page list.

  2. Week 1Content outline

Each page is mapped to the questions buyers ask before contacting you.

  3. Weeks 1 to 2Design approval

Figma designs for key pages, revised until you are happy.

  4. Weeks 2 to 5Build on staging

Developed privately, tested on phones, tablets and browsers.

  5. Week 6Launch and handover

Go live, redirects checked, editor training video delivered.

WordPress compared with Wix, Squarespace and Shopify

After launch: hosting, updates and security

The part most quotes leave out.

A WordPress site needs regular attention. Core software, theme and plugins receive updates, often for security reasons, and a site left alone for a year is an easy target. You can run updates yourself using the checklist in your handover notes, or hand the job to us.

Our Website Care plan covers fast UK hosting, updates, backups, security monitoring and small edits from £79 a month. If search growth is the priority, pair the site with technical SEO or local SEO so the pages keep earning their place.

  • Updates tested before they reach the live site
  • Backups stored away from your hosting
  • Uptime and security alerts watched
  • Small text and image edits handled for you

WordPress website questions

How much does a WordPress website cost?
Our WordPress builds start from £1,995 excluding VAT for up to eight custom pages, with WooCommerce shops and bespoke features quoted after a free audit. On top of that you pay for hosting and a domain, or roll both into Website Care from £79 a month. Our UK website cost guide explains where the money goes.
What is a WordPress website?
It is a website built on WordPress, free open-source software that you install on your own hosting. Because nobody else owns the platform, you can move host, change designer or add features without asking permission or paying a platform fee.
Is WordPress.com the same as WordPress.org?
No. WordPress.org is the free software we build on, installed on hosting in your name. WordPress.com is a paid hosted service run by one company, closer to Wix in how it works. When we say WordPress, we mean the self-hosted version.
Will I be able to update the website myself?
Yes. We set up the editor so pages, prices, team members and blog posts can be changed without touching code, and record a short walkthrough video of your own site. Layouts are locked where a slip could break the design.
How many plugins will my website need?
Usually fewer than fifteen, chosen for a reason and kept up to date. Most slow or hacked WordPress sites we inherit have thirty or more, often duplicates doing the same job. Every plugin we add is listed in your handover notes.
Can you move my Wix or Squarespace site to WordPress?
Yes. We rebuild the design, move your content and redirect every old address so rankings carry over. The process is the same one we use for every website migration.
Do you only build WordPress sites in Manchester?
No. Most clients are in Greater Manchester, including Stockport and Salford, but every project runs by video call, so we work with businesses across the UK at the same fixed prices.
