What does a Shopify web designer actually do?

The short answer, then what a good store needs.

A Shopify web designer turns a theme into a store built around your products and customers: clear collections, product pages that answer buying questions, and a checkout set up for UK payments and delivery. The aim is simple: more visitors who add to basket and finish paying.

Shopify is a hosted platform, so the servers, security patches and checkout code are looked after for you. What it does not do is decide how your shop should be organised, what each product page needs to say, or how shipping rules and discounts should work. That planning is where most of our time goes, and it is what separates a store that sells from one that just exists.

Is Shopify the right platform for your business?

An honest answer, because the wrong platform costs more later.

Shopify is the strongest choice for most businesses whose main goal is selling physical products online. Stock, variants, discounts, abandoned basket emails and sales on Google, Instagram and TikTok all live in one admin. It also scales well, so a store that starts with 30 products rarely needs rebuilding at 3,000.

It is a weaker fit for a service business that sells one or two packages, or for a brand whose growth depends on publishing lots of articles. In those cases a WordPress website usually gives more control for less money, and makers who mostly sell through bookings may be happier on Squarespace or Wix.

  • Selling physical products, gifts, food or clothing
  • Selling on several channels from one stock count
  • Subscriptions, bundles and gift cards
  • Planning to grow the range over time

Less suited: one-off service businesses, heavy publishing sites and marketplaces with many independent sellers.

Why many Shopify stores never take off

We often meet owners on their second or third store. The same few problems come up every time.

What we usually findWhat we build instead
A free theme with stock photos and no story

A design built around your products, your photography and why customers should buy from you.

Product pages that copy the supplier description

Fresh descriptions that answer size, material, delivery and returns questions before they are asked.

Twenty apps installed, half of them unused

Only the apps you need, chosen for speed, with features built into the theme where possible.

Collections with no words on them

Short, useful collection introductions that give Google something to rank.

The developer vanishes after launch

Direct support from the person who built it, and a care plan if you want ongoing help.

Shopify SEO: how to add keywords and get found

The same work also helps AI assistants recommend your products.

  1. Research how customers search

Find the words people use for your products and collections, such as "soy candle gift set" rather than "fragrance collection 3".

  2. Use them where Shopify reads them

Product title, URL handle, the search engine listing fields, image alt text and the first lines of each description.

  3. Give collections real content

A two or three paragraph introduction on each main collection, linked to related ones.

  4. Keep the structure clean

Sensible collection nesting and internal links, so ranking signals are not split across near-identical pages.

  5. Feed Google and AI shopping results

Accurate product schema and a clean Merchant Center feed with prices, stock and reviews.

Shopify stores also appear in AI shopping answers, which lean on the same structured data. Our AI Search Optimisation work and a technical SEO review cover the parts a theme cannot fix on its own.

How much does a Shopify website cost in the UK?

There are three separate costs, and only one of them is ours.

The first is the build. Ours starts at £2,495 for a designed store with your products loaded; extra integrations such as trade pricing, booking or stock syncing with an ERP are quoted separately, and bigger projects sit under custom development. The second is Shopify itself: a monthly plan plus card fees, paid directly to Shopify. The third is apps, which can quietly add up, so we keep the list short.

Moving to Shopify from another platform

Keep your products, customers and the rankings you have already earned.

We regularly move shops from WooCommerce, Wix, Squarespace, Etsy and older hosted carts. Products, variants, images, customers and order history are imported, and every old product and category address is redirected to its new home so Google and returning customers find it. The full process is on our website redesign and migration page.

The step most often skipped is checking the move from the outside: crawling the old store before launch, comparing it with the new one after, and watching Search Console daily for the first fortnight. That is where traffic is protected or lost.

  • Product and collection URLs mapped one to one
  • Customer accounts invited to the new store
  • Reviews moved with the products they belong to
  • Search Console checked daily after launch

Shopify website design questions

See also our FAQ page.

How much does a Shopify website cost in the UK?
Our Shopify builds start from £2,495 excluding VAT for a fully designed store with your products, payments and shipping set up. On top of that you pay Shopify a monthly subscription and card fees, plus any paid apps. Our UK website cost guide breaks the numbers down.
How long does a Shopify store take to build?
Most stores go live in six to ten weeks. The biggest variable is product data: a shop with 40 products and clean photos moves far faster than one with 800 variants that need new descriptions.
Will I own my Shopify store?
Yes. The store is created in your name, on your Shopify account, with your domain. We are added as a collaborator, and you can remove our access whenever you like.
Can I add products and change prices myself?
Yes. Shopify is one of the easiest platforms to run day to day. At handover we record short videos on adding products, running a discount and processing a refund on your own store.
Do you use a theme or build from scratch?
We start from a fast, well-supported Online Store 2.0 theme and design it around your brand, products and customers. That keeps the store quick and easy to update, and avoids paying for a fully custom theme that only a developer can edit.
Should I choose Shopify or WooCommerce?
Shopify suits most product businesses because hosting, security and checkout are handled for you. WooCommerce on WordPress makes sense when content and SEO matter more than selling, or when you need very unusual product logic.
Is Shopify good for SEO?
Yes, if it is set up properly. Shopify handles the technical basics well; most problems come from thin product descriptions, empty collection pages and apps that slow the store down. We fix those during the build, and ongoing SEO can take it further.
