What is custom website development?

And how it differs from a designed template.

Custom website development means writing the code behind a website specifically for your business, rather than adapting a theme or page builder made for everyone. It is the right choice when your site needs to calculate, connect, restrict or automate something that off-the-shelf tools handle badly.

Most of our bespoke builds still run on WordPress, with a theme written from scratch, structured content fields and custom plugins for the business logic. You keep a familiar editor, while the parts that make your site different, such as pricing rules or a client dashboard, are built properly instead of stitched together from add-ons. If your needs are simpler, our standard website design service is the better place to start.

Do you actually need custom development?

An honest check before you spend more than you need to.

Plenty of businesses are sold bespoke work they do not need. If your website mainly explains services, shows your work and collects enquiries, a well-built standard site does that job for less money and launches sooner.

  • Customers need an instant price based on their own answers
  • Clients or members log in to see documents, orders or progress
  • Bookings follow rules that ordinary booking tools cannot handle
  • Leads must flow straight into your CRM, accounts or job software
  • You publish hundreds of structured pages, such as listings or locations
  • A page builder has made the site too slow to fix

If none of those apply, choose Wix or Squarespace for a site you edit yourself, a standard WordPress build for content-led growth, or Shopify for an online shop. We will tell you which in the scoping call.

How we build: WordPress first, custom code where it earns its place

The technical choices, explained without the jargon.

We start from the content your team needs to manage and design the structure around it: custom post types for things like projects, locations or properties, and fields for every detail you will want to filter or display. That structure is what makes hundreds of pages manageable and what lets search engines read them clearly.

Business logic lives in small custom plugins, kept separate from the design, so a future redesign does not break your quote tool. Code is stored in a repository, tested on a staging site and deployed in a controlled way. Pages are built with clean markup, schema and fast loading from the start, which is why our builds are ready for technical SEO and AI search on launch day rather than needing a rescue later.

  • Custom post types and structured fields for your content
  • Business logic in its own documented plugin
  • Version control, staging and tested deployments
  • Schema, clean URLs and fast pages built in
  • Accessibility checked against WCAG 2.2 AA

Where bespoke web development goes wrong

The problems we are most often asked to untangle.

Custom build or template: how they compare

Neither is always right. This is the honest trade-off for a typical business.

Our custom website development process

From scoping call to documented handover.

Custom work fails when the specification is vague, so we spend more time on it than most agencies do. Nothing is built until you have approved a written scope, and you can follow progress on staging at any point. The wider approach is described on how it works.

  1. Scoping call

We walk through how your business works today and where the website should save time or win customers.

  2. Written specification

Pages, features, integrations and acceptance tests listed, with a fixed price and timeline.

  3. Design

Key templates designed and approved before development begins.

  4. Build in stages

Features delivered on staging in agreed stages, so you can test as we go.

  5. Launch and documentation

Go live, redirects checked, training recorded and technical notes handed over.

What affects the cost of a bespoke website

Why two custom quotes can be thousands of pounds apart.

The biggest cost drivers are logic and connections, not the number of pages. A calculator with three questions is a small job, while one that prices dozens of options and books a survey slot is a project in itself. Integrations depend on how good the other system's API is, which we check before quoting.

  • How many unique page templates are needed
  • The rules behind calculators, bookings and member areas
  • Which systems the site must connect to, and how
  • Moving existing content and redirecting old addresses
  • Accessibility, security and testing requirements

Our UK website cost guide breaks down running costs, and if you already have a site worth keeping, a redesign may get you most of the way for less. Businesses in Salford, Trafford and across the UK work with us the same way, by video call.

Custom development questions

See also our FAQ page.

How much does a custom website cost in the UK?
Our custom builds start from £3,995 excluding VAT, quoted in writing after a scoping call. The price depends on the number of templates, the integrations and how much logic sits behind forms and calculators. Our website cost guide explains the running costs too.
How long does a custom website take?
Longer than a standard build, usually six to twelve weeks depending on scope. The timeline is agreed in writing with the specification, and you see progress on a private staging site throughout.
Who owns the code?
You do. The theme, plugins and any custom code are handed over with your hosting and repository access, plus documentation, so another developer could pick the work up if you ever needed them to.
Why do you build custom sites on WordPress?
For most business websites it gives the best balance: custom code where it is needed, and a familiar editor for everything else. If a project is better suited to a different stack, we will say so in the scoping call rather than force it.
Can my team still edit the website?
Yes. Content is managed through structured fields and reusable blocks, so your team can change text, prices, team members and case studies without touching code or breaking the layout.
Is a custom website better than a template?
Not always. A template or a hosted builder is cheaper and faster when your needs are standard. Custom development pays off when a template forces workarounds, slows the site down or cannot connect to the systems you run on.
What happens after launch?
Custom code needs care like any software. Website Care covers hosting, updates, backups and small edits from £79 a month, and new features are scoped and quoted before work starts.
