What does an ecommerce SEO agency do?

The short answer, then the parts most shops miss.

An ecommerce SEO agency makes the category and product pages of an online shop easier for search engines to crawl, understand and rank, then improves those pages until they match what buyers search for. The goal is more orders from search without paying for every click.

For most independent shops, the quickest wins are not new blog posts. They are category pages with no useful text, thousands of duplicate filter addresses, product titles written for the warehouse rather than the buyer, and product data that Google cannot use for its free listings. We fix those first, using the same groundwork as our technical SEO service, and then build the content and authority that move competitive categories.

How shoppers find products now

Four places a buyer meets your shop before they ever reach the basket.

A buyer might start with a broad Google search, compare prices in the Shopping tab, read a review, then ask an AI assistant which option suits them. Each step draws on the same thing: clear, consistent information about your products. If your product titles, prices, sizes and returns policy differ between your site and your product feed, you lose trust at every step.

AI assistants are particularly literal. Asked for linen bedding that does not crease, they look for shops that actually say their linen is pre-washed and explain why. Product pages that answer those buying questions in plain text are the ones that get quoted. Our answer engine optimisation work applies that to your best-selling ranges.

How to structure an ecommerce site for SEO

The decisions that matter more than any single page.

Structure decides which pages Google treats as important. Every product should sit in a clear category, every category should be reachable in a few clicks from the homepage, and each indexable page should target searches nobody else on your site targets. Filtered views get their own page only when people genuinely search for them, such as "king size linen duvet cover".

  • Categories named the way buyers search, not the way stock is coded
  • One indexable version of each product, with variants handled properly
  • Filters that help shoppers without creating thousands of duplicate pages
  • Out of stock pages kept or redirected, never just deleted
  • Breadcrumbs and internal links that pass authority to key ranges

If the current platform or theme makes this impossible, a migration or redesign with every old address redirected may be the better long-term fix. We will tell you honestly after the audit.

Why online shops struggle to grow from search

The patterns we see when a shop asks why traffic has stalled.

What we usually findWhat we change
Manufacturer descriptions copied onto every product

Original descriptions for the products that earn the most, written around buyer questions.

Collection pages with a heading and nothing else

A short, useful introduction, buying guidance and links to related ranges.

Thousands of filter and tag pages in Google

Only filtered views with real demand left indexable, the rest controlled.

Discontinued products deleted, leaving broken links

Redirects to the closest product or category, keeping earned links.

Returns and delivery information hard to find

Clear delivery and returns pages, which buyers, Google and AI assistants all look for.

Do ecommerce sites need SEO and PPC?

Usually yes, but for different jobs.

Paid Shopping and search ads are the fastest way to test a new product or cover a busy season. SEO is slower to start but keeps working when you stop paying. Shops that rely only on ads often find their margins squeezed as bid prices rise, while shops with strong organic categories can choose when to spend.

We focus on organic search and visibility in Google AI Overviews and other assistants, and work alongside whoever runs your ads, sharing which searches convert so neither side wastes money. Clear policies help both: under the Consumer Contracts Regulations most online buyers can cancel within 14 days, so a plain returns page reassures buyers and gives assistants a fact they can repeat. Check current guidance for your products.

  • Ads for speed, launches and seasonal peaks
  • SEO for categories you want to own year round
  • Shared data on which searches turn into orders

Ecommerce SEO questions

What is ecommerce SEO?
Ecommerce SEO is the work that makes an online shop's category and product pages appear when people search for the things it sells, on Google, in Google Shopping's free listings and in AI assistants. It covers site structure, product data, page content, speed and the trust signals that persuade a buyer.
Which ecommerce platform is best for SEO?
Shopify and WooCommerce can both rank very well. Shopify handles hosting and speed for you but is stricter about URLs; WooCommerce on WordPress gives more control and suits content-heavy shops. The platform matters less than the set-up. See our Shopify and WordPress pages for the build side.
How long does ecommerce SEO take to work?
Fixes to crawling, duplicate pages and product data often show in Search Console within a few weeks. Category pages climbing for competitive searches usually takes three to six months, depending on your market and how much authority the shop already has.
Do we need SEO if we already run Google Shopping ads?
Ads buy traffic for as long as you pay. SEO builds traffic that keeps arriving, and it lowers your reliance on ads over time. Most shops do best with both, and the same clean product data improves your ads and your free listings.
How much do your ecommerce SEO services cost?
Our SEO plans start from £495 a month excluding VAT, with a three-month minimum. Larger catalogues or AI search work start from £695 a month. Everything is quoted in writing after a free audit, see all prices.
What should happen to pages for products that are out of stock?
If the product is coming back, keep the page live, say when, and offer alternatives. If it is gone for good, redirect the page to the closest product or category, so the links and rankings it earned are not thrown away.
Do filter pages hurt ecommerce SEO?
They can. Colour, size and price filters can create thousands of near-duplicate addresses that waste Google's attention. We decide which filtered views deserve their own indexable page, because people search for them, and keep the rest out of the index.
