What are technical SEO services?

The foundations under every ranking and every AI citation.

Technical SEO services make sure search engines and AI crawlers can reach, render and understand every important page on your website. They cover crawling, indexing, redirects, site speed, structured data and site architecture, rather than the words on the page.

A business can have excellent service pages and still be invisible because Google never indexed them, because a plugin set them to noindex, or because a slow mobile template makes visitors leave before the first paragraph loads. Our work starts below the surface: we crawl the site the way Googlebot does, compare that with what is actually in the index, and trace every gap back to its cause. It is the technical half of our wider SEO service, and the first step in any AI Search Optimisation plan.

Signs your website has a technical SEO problem

You rarely see these from the front of the site. Search Console and a crawl show them within minutes.

What you noticeWhat we fix
New pages take weeks to appear in Google, or never do

We check index coverage, internal links and sitemaps, then request indexing for the pages that matter.

Traffic fell after a redesign or a platform change

Old addresses are matched to new ones and redirected, and redirect chains are flattened to a single hop.

Search Console shows "Crawled, currently not indexed"

We find the thin, duplicate or near-empty pages Google is skipping, then improve, merge or remove them.

Mobile pages feel slow and visitors leave

Image formats, render-blocking scripts, fonts and hosting are tuned until Core Web Vitals pass.

The wrong page ranks for your main service

Canonical tags, internal links and page targeting are aligned so Google picks the right page.

Our technical SEO audit, step by step

What we look at, and in what order, on every website we take on.

Automated tools produce long lists of warnings, most of which never affect rankings. Our technical SEO audit is written by a person, and it separates the few issues that cost you visibility from the noise. Each finding comes with the affected pages, why it matters and the exact fix.

  • Index coverage: what Google has indexed against what you want indexed
  • Rendering: whether content built with JavaScript is visible to crawlers
  • Site architecture: click depth, orphan pages and internal link flow
  • Canonicalisation: duplicate URLs, parameters and trailing slashes
  • Redirects: chains, loops and broken internal links
  • Core Web Vitals: LCP, INP and CLS from real Chrome users
  • Structured data: Organisation, LocalBusiness, Service, Product and FAQ markup
  • Crawl controls: robots.txt, meta robots and AI crawler access
  • Store issues: filters, pagination and out-of-stock pages on Shopify and WooCommerce
  • Mobile layout: tap targets, font sizes and layout shifts on real devices

Start with the free version: our free SEO and AI visibility audit covers the most serious issues in two working days.

Why is technical SEO important?

Because nothing else you pay for works without it.

Search engines have a limited amount of attention for each website. If that attention is spent on duplicate filter pages, broken links and slow templates, your important pages are crawled less often and ranked with less confidence. Fixing the technical layer is usually the quickest win available to a small business, because the content you already paid for starts to count.

It matters even more now that answers are generated by AI. Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT search and Perplexity all depend on crawlers reaching a page and reading its structure. A site that blocks those crawlers, hides prices inside images or lacks schema is hard to quote. Our AI Overview SEO work builds directly on a clean technical base.

  • Your existing pages finally get indexed and ranked
  • Faster pages keep more mobile visitors
  • Clear structure helps Google and AI tools understand what you offer
  • Fewer surprises after updates, migrations or new apps

Technical SEO checklist: what we fix first

The order matters. Indexing problems come before speed, and speed before polish.

  1. Week 1Indexing and access

Robots.txt, noindex tags, sitemaps and AI crawler access, so every important page can be found.

  2. Weeks 2 to 3Redirects and duplicates

Redirect chains, broken links, canonical tags and duplicate pages cleaned up.

  3. Weeks 3 to 5Speed and Core Web Vitals

Images, scripts, fonts, caching and hosting tuned for mobile visitors.

  4. Weeks 5 to 8Structure and schema

Internal links, click depth and structured data so Google understands every service.

Website speed optimisation and Core Web Vitals

Google measures speed with real visitors, not lab scores.

Core Web Vitals are three measurements Google collects from real Chrome users: how quickly the main content appears, how quickly the page responds to a tap, and how much the layout jumps while loading. A page passes when at least three quarters of visits meet each target. We use that field data, not a single lab test, to decide what to change.

Most of the gains on small business sites come from a short list: oversized images, too many plugins or apps, third-party chat and review widgets, web fonts and cheap shared hosting. If the template itself is the problem, a website redesign with the rankings protected can be better value than patching it. Our website cost guide shows what a rebuild involves.

How to choose a technical SEO agency

Six questions that separate real technical work from a rebadged tool report.

  • Can I see a sample audit? Look for findings tied to specific pages, not a generic score.
  • Who makes the fixes? A technical SEO consultant who only reports leaves you finding a developer.
  • How is each fix checked? Ask about Search Console validation and recrawls.
  • Will you touch my live site? Changes should be tested and logged.
  • Do I keep every account? Search Console, analytics and hosting should stay in your name.
  • How do you report? Plain English, with indexed pages and Core Web Vitals over time.

Technical SEO questions

See also our FAQ page.

What is technical SEO?
Technical SEO is the part of SEO that deals with how search engines and AI crawlers access, render and understand your website: crawling, indexing, redirects, canonical tags, site speed, structured data and internal linking. Content and links only work once these foundations are sound.
What is a technical SEO audit?
A technical SEO audit is a page-by-page check of the issues that stop a website being crawled, indexed or loaded quickly. Ours ends with a prioritised fix list, so you know which three or four changes matter most before anything else is touched.
What is included in technical SEO?
Crawl and index coverage, redirects and broken links, canonical tags, XML sitemaps and robots.txt, Core Web Vitals, mobile rendering, structured data, internal link depth, duplicate and thin pages, and access for AI crawlers. On larger stores it also covers filters, pagination and faceted navigation.
How much do technical SEO services cost?
Technical SEO is included in every monthly SEO plan, from £495 a month excluding VAT with a three-month minimum. One-off technical audits and fix projects are quoted in writing after a free audit, so you only pay for work your site actually needs.
Do I still need a developer?
Usually not. We make the fixes ourselves on WordPress, Shopify, Wix and Squarespace. On a custom build we write clear tickets your developer can action and then check every change once it is live.
How quickly will technical fixes show results?
Indexing and redirect fixes often show in Search Console within two to four weeks, once Google recrawls the affected pages. Speed improvements appear in real-user Core Web Vitals data after about 28 days, because Google reports a rolling month.
Does technical SEO help with AI search?
Yes. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews can only quote pages their crawlers can reach and parse. Blocked crawlers, slow rendering or missing schema keep you out of AI answers as surely as out of Google. Our AI Search Optimisation plans start with exactly these checks.
How do I choose a technical SEO agency?
Ask to see a sample audit, ask who will make the fixes and how they are verified, and check that you keep every account. A good technical SEO agency explains each issue in plain English, ranks fixes by impact and never hides behind a score from an automated tool.
